Mexican Cuisine

Depending on where you live, you may have a hard time finding certain ingredients common to Mexican cooking.  I know that my most-local grocery store may (on occasion) have jalapenos but there is no way I'm going to find serrano peppers, tomatillos or achiote.  I have to travel about a half hour to get them and I'm not always successful.

Here are a few sources for recipes and hard to find ingredients:

www.rickbayless.com

www.fronterakitchens.com

www.melissas.com

www.mexgrocer.com

www.gourmetsleuth.com

Basic Items for Mexican Cooking:

Fresh Chiles (including serrano, jalapeno, habanero, poblano)

Dried Chiles (including anchos, pasillas, guajillo and arbol chiles)

Ground Chiles

Canned Chipotle Chiles in Adobo Sauce  **storing tips

Avocado

Limes

Onions

Plantains

Achiote Seasoning

Mas Harina (tortilla flour, to make fresh tortillas)
