Grandma Baldwin's Maine Recipes My grandmother grew up in Maine in a small town called Orono. Maine, of course, is known for many things but at the top of the list are lobster and blueberries. I never knew lobster was considered a luxury... it seemed like a regular thing to be served boiled lobsters for dinner when visiting my Grandparents who settled in Massachusetts after marrying. I couldn't believe it when some of my friends (as adults) admitted to never having tried lobster in their life. That seems outrageous to me! I remember many things about my grandma- her soft, chubby body that was so warm when she hugged, her happy humming and singing throughout the house and of course her baked goods. That woman could make a pie out of any fruit, even a bitter sour berry could be whipped up into a sweet dessert with a flakey crust. Mom mom has mentioned that as a child, she and her brothers had a homemade dessert every night after dinner (apparently Grandpa had a serious sweet tooth). She would make puddings, cakes, pies, cookies.... each night a different treat. And guess what.... neither my grandfather, my mom nor her brothers were overweight. Grandma was a little chubby, but aren't they supposed to be? Her blueberry muffins are the best I've ever had. My mom now carries on that tradition and she bakes them for my brothers and I (and our spouses) a few times a year when fresh blueberries are in season. They are not heavy and cake-y like so many you find in bakeries and grocery stores. They almost feel hollow inside. When you break one open with your fingers, it's almost like a cross between a popover and a cake. Delicious! Here are a few of Grandma Baldwin's famous recipes.....
