August 26, 2007

I'm about 2 weeks into my new venture and, despite throwing out my back for over a week and not doing the treadmill (as you can see by the empty log),  I have lost 7 pounds.  Not bad.  And somewhere in there I had some chocolate, a small bag of peanut M&Ms (not the jumbo of course), three  servings of pancakes, and all the dishes I have posted thus far.  I can't wait to get walking again to see even more progress.  I don't weigh myself often  (haven't in 2 weeks) so I was pleasantly surprised to see the scale.  I'm not ready to share my start weight yet (or my before picture), but if successful I may eventually do so.  I'll continue to keep you posted on my progress.

August 10, 2007 - The Beginning

Have you ever seen a fat runner?  I haven't.

I'm 39.  I'm fat.  I lack energy.  I need to exercise.  The problem is, I don't have the energy to exercise.  However, exercise is a sure way to increase my energy.  See my problem?   But seriously... I don't want to spend hours in the gym.  I don't want any more expensive equipment.  I have a treadmill, a stair master and a weight system but I rarely use them.  I want to get a lot of bang for my buck.  I've been walking on the treadmill 3-5 times a week.  Just walking.  It's been tough.  I used to run 3 miles at a clip (after taking running for gym in college when I was young and in shape) so this is very humbling.  It kills me to just walk.  I like to start somewhere above rock bottom- the whole slow build-up to success has never been for me.  I'm an all or nothing kind of girl and I like a fast ride.  I started walking (and only walking) after some advise from a co-worker.  I was talking about my desire to run and how I'm out of shape and asthmatic.  She too is asthmatic and runs about 5 miles a day, 5 days a week.  She is skinny.  Not the annoying Nicole Richie who never ate a donut in her entire life skinny, but a healthy skinny.  Tall, lean.... not an ounce of fat on her body.  And she eats.  She said it was very difficult at first and she was not able to run even a block in the beginning, let alone a quarter mile.  She just walked for 6 months straight, about 5 days a week.  Walk, walk, walk.  After that, she would walk / run / walk / run.  That was a couple of years ago.  Now she's rocking 5 miles a day while carrying an inhaler.  She is an absolute inspiration.  So here I am, in the first of my 6 months of "walking".  Picturing her as I drag myself out of bed to put on my running shoes is very motivating.

And to think..... if I get up to 5 miles a day, just imagine the amount of calories I could be burning.  Forget the 1,200 calorie a day diet!  I'll be able to be a little more relaxed about what I put into my mouth.  I'll still watch the sugar/carb content as well as the saturated fat.  Loading up on those would be counterproductive, don't you think?

I will be tracking my progress (click here).  It's a way to keep me accountable to myself.  I'll walk for exactly 30 minutes each day and track my distance.  Theoretically my distance should increase as time goes on..... we'll see.
